For six years I have been an active member of the Watergate at Landmark’s (WAL) Lions Club. For the last three years I have served as President and now serve as Club Secretary. The traditional service project for all Lion Clubs is visual health. For the last three years I have volunteered with the Virginia RAM (Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps) in Wise, Virginia. This RAM provides vision, dental and general health support to the local area which also includes nearby communities in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Each year over 1,000 people come to Wise to have their medical needs looked after. Volunteer doctors and other medical professionals provide their services during this three day event. Services offered include dental cleanings, dental fillings, dental extractions, dental x-rays, eye exams, eyeglass prescriptions, eyeglasses made on-site, hearing screenings and hearing aids, mental health services, osteopathic manipulation services, women’s health exams, including mammograms, chiropractic services, chest x-rays, cancer screenings, and general medical exams. All services are free and no ID is required.
Doctors come from all over to give of their time and talents. This couple came from upstate New York to provide dental services.
